I had the same problem with my MacBook Pro. I could not get it to start up, I took it to the "genius" bar at the Apple store and he told me to start up from an external drive and go in and save everything I could and then format the drive. I could not get a system loaded on an external drive I had, so I was left with no option but to format.

Hello, Lately, some of my games have not been working and I'm not quite sure why, it's all just happened all of a sudden.
I have somewhat an idea of what possibly could be the problem but I'm no expert on computer.
At first, let me just say, my computer isn't the best for gaming but it does or has run games that I like to play.
I bought a game called War Z recently but it did not work very well on more info computer.
I had very low frames and a lot of lag spikes.
My friend apple download games dmg me to overclock my video card but I wasn't too sure on what that meant but he talked me through it.
I have an ATI Radeon graphics card so I used the catalyst control centre to overclock.
He told me to unlock the overclock section and press this "auto" button at the top.
So I let it do it's thing until it finished.
When it finished, my apple games computer wont start up computer did not detect my video card at all.
During the overclock process, my please click for source did make a lot of noise I'm guessing it was the video card and was wondering what actually was happening.
I decided to restart my computer for the hope that my graphics card hadn't died.
So I went to try War Z again and noticed a little difference which made it a lot more playable.
Days went past and I came across something about overclocking on a forum and read it which said that overclocking can reduce the lifetime of the component.
As soon as I saw this, I went back onto the catalyst control centre and slid both the overlock sliders back to the bottom were they where before although I can't relock the overclock section so I'm not sure if my video card is still classed as overclocked.
Even though I have moved the sliders back, I was expecting war z not to work as good anymore but surprisingly it still was.
More days went past and decided to play some war z, that is until I came to this error saying that my video card is out of memory.
I tried opening another game, left 4 dead 2 and that also gave me an error something to do with D3D, not sure what that means.
I tried opening another game, Gotham city importers which again, gave me an error.
San Andreas, that didn't give me an error, it just wouldn't open.
The funny thing is, some of my other games run fine.
World of Warcraft and minecraft I am playing without any problems.
Guild Wars 2 is also fine however when I play this, I can hear squeaky noises in my computer.
I'm not sure if something is wrong with my computer, I have a virus which norton hasn't detected or I am just having a bad day.
Here are my computer specs written this down myself, I may copy and paste from the command prompt some other time as I'm not on my computer right now.
OS: Windows XP Service Pack 3 32-bit CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4600 2.
Hope someone can help me with my problem.
Thanks I would reset your OC in CCC and reinstall your drivers.
You might actually be running out of VRAM as your video card is pretty old.
Most games will need more than 256mb.
Most games nowadays want atleast 512MB of VRAM, and your card has 256MB.
Did you increase the resolution of your game s recently?
Try lowerin' them back down.
Are you watching videos whilst your gaming?
Try shutting off any other active programs.
With your computer off, and having grounded yourself, try taking out your graphics card and putting it back in; could be a contacts issue?
The games I am having problems with are mostly on the lowest possible graphics and on the CCC, I have set 3D to performance.
Some games however, I can't even get into now to even lower the graphics, but the graphics my games are set too my apple games computer wont start up used to play perfectly.
Games that still work: WoW - Fair Graphics Minecraft - Fast Graphics Guild Wars 2 - Lowest Graphics Games that don't work: War Z - Lowest Graphics L4D2 - Medium Graphics Can't get on to lower them San Andreas - High Graphics Can't get on to lower them Gotham City - Lowest Graphics May try some more games out later but I will check for driver updates already checked my GPU and see if anything changes.
Your processor and GPU are really low end.
You CANNOT overclock a 256MB GPU and expect things to work fine.
You need a new set up.
If it's a PC and not a laptop, then change the processor and GPU.
Actually, you'll probably need to change the motherboard too.
Your best solution is UPGRADES.

My Sony Vaio is the one that got messed up. I just downloaded something called X17-58997.iso from PCworld. My laptop didn't come with the Windows 7 Disc, and when I try to open the Windows Help and Support menu, nothing happens. The .iso is Windows 7 64 bit. Do you think this will be useful in wiping my computer? I already backed up my info.

Ok, so you were lucky enough to have it start up and no problems with the display. Everything’s great, right? Not so fast. Your Hard Drive, which holds your data (files, pictures, movies, music) may have been damaged. Let the system start up and see if you can begin to use the computer.

And I don't think anyone else on this computer has ever downloaded this game besides me (Unless if my older cousin that was staying for the summer somehow played.

I am not aware of any changes made to the computer besides an iTunes problem where I had to completely uninstall iTunes and all Apple software from my computer and reinstall, and that was several days before this issue began occurring. As stated above, I tried the Shift+restart method. All it does is restart the computer back to the time/date.

You don't need to hold down the power button to turn on the computer. You should hear the computer's internal fan and disk drive begin spinning; after a few seconds, your computer's monitor will also light up and display either the start-up screen or the login screen, depending on whether the computer was off or sleeping.

To be honest not really.
I'm surprised you can play that many games at all with this setup.
Maybe the card has fried or something else is going but on a system this old it's better to start fresh rather than patch the leaks in a sieve.

None that I can think of with that set up.
Sorry Alright, guess I will have to put up with the games my computer can still run.
Just to let you guys know though, my specs do meet the minimum requirements for these games apart from war z and gotham city but they have both ran perfectly in the past.
Just so you know, I got all my games working again apart from War Z.
Thanks for the help guys.
Inquiring minds want to know.
I would have suggested removing your drivers and installing the latest ones.
What did you do?
I just left my computer off for a while then when I turned it on, everything worked fine but not as good as it used too.
My computer has been making weirder noises lately.
Soon as it stops working, going to either replace parts or go console.

1 day ago · I have a Windows 10 installed on a 120GB SSD and because I had issues with the size (eg. the AppData folder took up around 35GB space) I decided to reinstall windows and move all of the program folders (C:\Program Files, C:\Program Files (x86), C:\ProgramData) and the Users folder to my 1TB HDD.

Mac startup problemsbut stalling at the gray screen can be one of the most troublesome because there are so many possible causes.
In addition, there are many Mac issues that get mistaken for the gray screen startup problem.
This is especially true of Macs with built-in Retina displays, such as the Retina iMac models that don't have a power on indicator.
This startup issue is called the gray screen problem because historically, the display would turn gray during the start-up phase when the problem struck.
The more recent Retina Mac models have a black or very dark display instead.
The gray screen problem occurs after a Mac is started or restarted.
The problem is characterized by the display changing from the that occurs at power up to a gray screen, though you might not see the blue screen because it tends to go by very fast.
It's also possible that your specific Mac model doesn't display the blue screen.
Apple has streamlined the startup process, and fewer screens types display during startup.
You might see only the gray screen.
It may also include the Apple logo, a spinning gear, a spinning globe, or a prohibitory sign a circle with a slash drawn through it.
In all cases, your Mac seems to be stuck.
There are no unusual noises, such as disk access, spin up or down, or excessive fan noise; just a Mac that won't continue to the login screen or the desktop.
Another startup problem that's mistaken for the gray screen issue is a gray screen with a folder icon and a flashing question mark.
That's a separate problem, which is.

One of the most common problems that can cause the gray screen issue is a bad peripheral or peripheral cable.
When a bad peripheral is plugged into your Mac, it can prevent it from continuing the startup sequence, and cause it to stall while it waits for the peripheral to respond to a command.
The most my apple games computer wont start up form of this is when a bad peripheral or its cable causes one of the signaling pins on one of Mac's ports to get stuck in one condition set high, set low, or shorted out to ground or positive voltage.
Any of these conditions can cause your Mac to freeze during the startup process.
If your Mac starts back up without issue, then you'll know that it's a problem with a peripheral.
You'll need to shut your Mac back down, reconnect one peripheral, and then restart your Mac.
Continue this process of reconnecting one peripheral at a time and then restarting your Mac until you find the bad peripheral.
Remember that the problem can also be a bad cable, so if you plug a peripheral back in and it causes the gray screen issue, try the peripheral with a new cable before you replace the peripheral.
Swap your mouse and keyboard with a known good pair, and then restart your Mac.
If you don't have spares, just disconnect them and restart by pressing and holding the power key.
If your Mac gets to the login this web page or desktop, then you'll need to determine whether the problem is the mouse or the keyboard.
Try plugging in one at a time and then restarting to confirm.
To do that, first disconnect all of the peripherals, except the mouse and keyboard.
During the Safe Boot, your Mac performs a directory check of your startup drive.
If the drive directory is intact, the OS continues the startup process by loading only the minimum number of kernel extensions it needs to boot.
If your Mac successfully starts up in Safe Boot mode, try restarting your Mac again in normal mode.
If your Mac starts and makes it to the login screen or the desktop, then verify that your startup drive is working correctly.
Chances are the drive has some issues that need to be repaired.
You can to check and repair your drive; you may even need to replace the drive.
Resetting the PRAM and the SMC returns your Mac's hardware to its default settings.
For instance, sound levels are set to the default, the internal speakers are set as the source of audio output, and the display options and brightness reset.

If you added any RAM to your Mac after you bought it, remove that RAM, and then see if games apple Mac starts normally.
If it does, then one or more pieces of RAM have failed, and you'll need to replace it.
However, you should be able to continue working with your Mac until you get the replacement RAM.
Unfortunately, we're getting to the point where the troubleshooting steps will likely cause you to lose some, if not all, of the data on your startup drive.
So, before we go there, be sure to try this RAM fix first.
This verifies if the startup drive is having problems.
This tells your Mac to boot from the my apple games computer wont start up in the optical drive.
If your Mac boots using any of these methods, repair the startup drive using instructions in the Disk Utility First Aid guide OS X Yosemite and earlier or OS X El Capitan or later.
If you started from an install DVD or the Recovery HD, use the same basic steps, but the Disk Utility application won't be located in the Applications folder.
Instead, you'll find it as a menu item in the Apple menu bar if you started from the install DVD or in the window of Mac OS X Utilities that opens if you started from the Recovery HD.
If at this point you successfully started your Mac but the repair process didn't work, the startup drive may need to be replaced, which involves reinstalling the entire.
If you do repair the startup drive, it may need to be replaced in the near future.
This special startup mode boots the Mac to a screen that displays information about the startup process.
The display looks like an from the days of mainframes and time-share computing systems, but it's more akin to the startup sequence in many Unix and Linux operating systems.
In fact, many of the same commands are available from my apple games computer wont start up prompt.
When in single-user mode, the Mac doesn't automatically load the GUI, including the Desktop; instead, it stops the boot process after launching the basic OS kernel.
Remove or replace the startup drive, or take your Mac to an authorized service center, such as the at an Apple store.
If you are unable to start your Mac with any of the methods listed above, you may have a damaged startup drive or another internal component that's preventing your Mac from booting.

I had the same problem with my MacBook Pro. I could not get it to start up, I took it to the "genius" bar at the Apple store and he told me to start up from an external drive and go in and save everything I could and then format the drive. I could not get a system loaded on an external drive I had, so I was left with no option but to format.
